Can someone explain to me what's wrong with a lot of teams being good? I hear a lot of older adults, a lot of them who like to call and gripe to sports talk radio, and talk about how there are no good teams, quality of play is down, lower scoring means bad teams, etc.
Ummmm, are you watching games or just bitching about box scores? Maybe UConn v. Notre Dame isn't exactly a marquis matchup, but that was a good game. Hell, even Michigan managed to be entertaing this week, and we all know they suck. Besides, without paridy, we have no chance to kill the BCS. (PLEASE, CORNHUSKERS, PLEASE BEAT TEXAS!). Without paridy, the NCAA tourney isn't the best sporting event we have... well, maybe it still would be.
We still get great teams in all sports. Florida in football (side note: someone asked me why I hate Tim Tebow... my buddy helped me out. I hate how the media covers Tim Tebow. I have no problem with him, which probably greatly increases my chance of getting into heaven). Anyways, we have the Pats the last decade, some good Lakers and Spurs runs in the NBA, that Celts team a couple years ago, Yankees (shoot me), Red Wings, Tiger Woods, etc. Are we gonna get another UCLA let by Wooden? Of course not. Those are once in a lifetime teams, and those guys are probably a once ever team. But we still get these modern dynasties, that may not win 4 straight championships, but they're damn good, too, just facing better competition.
But the point is sports is sports. At it's most basic, it's all in fun. On a deeper level, it brings communities together. It teaches us sportsmanship, humility in winning and losing, teamwork, desire, the point of never giving up, respect (both for the other team and for your coach. Except Ohio St. No respect there. And yes, I respect Notre Dame. I will now dodge a lighning bolt from Bo from heaven).
Anyways, this is your friendly reminder to love sports for what it is. A game. Something you have an emotional tie to that you have no control over. And that, on infinite levels, is good for your soul.
