Army/Navy moratorium and Week 15 Picks

Army crushed me.  And I'm not a West Point grad.  As for Mojo... well, if you see him, give him a hug, show him a picture of his daughter, make a donation to Team RWB.  Remind him what really matters in life.  Usually, he's just pissed after this game.  This year... well, let's say this.  We were in the last row in the Linc.  We stayed to listen to the alma maters.  Stopped to pee.  Walked all the way to the cars.  He barely said a word.  That said... I had another great time.  Caught up with Mrs. and Papa Mojo.  Seriously, my MI peeps, get out here next year.  Thanks again for the tix, buddy.

This matters
Anyways, I'm too distraught over that and my complete inability to get my locks over .500 to post anything but picks.  That, and I totally jinxed my teasers a few posts ago and am like 1-5 since I mentioned I was undefeated.  It's why you gotta love the NFL.  No comments, just picks.  For posterity's sake, ya know?

Week 15 Picks - 7-8/1-2/0-2; 94-94-3/16-19-1/7-5 for the year

Cincy (-4) at Philly
NY Giants (+1) at Atlanta
Tampa (+3.5) at New Orleans
Houston (-8) vs. Indy - Lock
Denver (-3) at Baltimore - Lock
Miami (-7) vs. Jacksonville
Cleveland vs. Washington - Off the board.  I play RG3 in fantasy semis... bad karma to root against him playing?
Minnesota (+3) at St. Louis
Green Bay (-3) at Chicago
Seattle (-5) at Buffalo, in Toronto
Carolina (+3) at San Diego
Detroit (-6.5) at Arizona - Lock
Pittsburgh (-2) at Dallas - See 3, RG
Kansas City (+3) at Oakland
San Francisco (+6) at New England
NY Jets (+1.5) at Tennessee - Monday Night torture
3 Team Teaser - Kansas City +12, Houston +1, Detroit +2.5.

2012 Most Ridiculous Bowls

So I started the "Most Ridiculous Bowls" post pretty much right when I started the blog.  That year, I took a lot of time breaking it down by stupid names, stupid locations, and how many bowls we the taxpayers sponsored (read: company took bailout money.  It was quite a few).
Making a list...

This year... I honestly didn't even know where to begin.  With the new kid on board, the holidays a coming, and fun trip to the local beer store with the cuz... forget it.  Let's just break it down by category and get this absurdity over with.  And yes, I'm looking at you, Discover Orange Bowl.

Army/Navy props and the Week 13 picks

So little to do, so much time... wait, that was pre-children.  Check that.  You gotta walk before you can crawl.  Hang on...

It will always be funny...
LB was THISCLOSE to taking the entire week off.  Then, ARG pushed through the croup (if your kids have had this, my thoughts go out to you), LB, Jr. decided to sleep like a 2 month old, and I came up with one more day before I gotta go back to work.  My dad asked if I was looking forward to getting back... my response?  "Not even a little bit."

I did remember a few more things from my bucket list I accidentally left off the first time, so let's hit those before a quick picks hitter, ya?

Giving Thanks and the Week 12 picks

I'm sorry, I just had to start with that.  "Being fat is funny, but a fat person in a Smart Car is f-ing hysterical."  Unfortunately, the Googles couldn't find a pic of a fat person in a Smart Car.  Please, for the sake of humanity, someone get that pic on the Internets.  Stat.  That quote from above and that picture I found while trying to find a fat person in a Smart Car just made me love Fah T even more.

But we digress...

So the plan this week was to write a post for all the sports things I'm thankful for.  Then, LB Jr. showed up and, well, maybe parenting is a sport.  Anyways, for the sake of keeping my word, and for those keeping score at... (F**K ME!!!), here is a brief list of things I'm thankful for:

1.  Rutgers joining the Big Ten.  Why?  Cause we will now be Rutgers season ticket holders, fulfilling one of my bucket list items I forgot to post before.  Hello, Big Ten games!

2.  The NCAA tournament.

3.  The death of the BCS.

4.  USC beating Notre Dame.  (ND only a 6 point favorite???)

5.  All of you who are on my LB mailing list.  Thank you for being a part of my family's life.  I truly love all of you.

I'm thankful for you, too, buddy.
Why did my picks suck so bad last week?  Baby brain.  Duh.  That, and the Mayans must of created baby brain to stupidify our society.  I wonder if the Mayans ate turkey.  Probably yeah, but they probably didn't have stuffing.  No sweet potatoes.  No pumpkin pie.  Wild boar jerky, maybe...

Week 12 Picks - 4-9/1-2/2-0 (teasers > baby brain); 73-74-1/13-15/7-1 (seriously, someone better be playing my teasers)

Houston (-3) at Detroit - Lock #1.  Nuf said.

Dallas (-3) vs. Washington - Tempted to make this Lock #2.  Line is just strange enough to make it a stay away.  Why is Dallas so bad?

New England (-7) at NY Jets - So much for my "Pats like killer instinct" thing.  I will make this Lock #2, though.

Denver (-10.5) at Kansas City - I honestly have no idea why the Chiefs are this bad.  Maybe just need a QB?

Jacksonville (+3) vs. Tennessee - Henne just proved what the rest of us know... Blaine Gabbert is just awful.

Indianapolis (-3) vs. Buffalo - Colts bounce back.

Pittsburgh (PK) at Cleveland - Next year, when Shurmur goes, Cleveland wins games like this.

Seattle (-2.5) at Miami - You know, I got bit on the "favorites seem good" week a couple weeks ago.  I think I'm going back for one more bitten.

Tampa Bay (PK) vs. Atlanta - LOVE Tampa.  Love love love them.

Baltimore (PK) at San Diego - What the hell is that line...

St. Louis (+1) at Arizona - They should just skip this game.  Even fantasy football players don't care about this game.

New Orleans (+1.5) vs. San Francisco - This game is off the board, pending the Niners QB situation.  I'm not gonna count it, but I do think New Orleans is gonna win this game regardless.

Green Bay (+3) at NY Giants - Definitely a teaser game.  Seems like a strange line to me.  Giants off the bye, I guess.

Carolina (PK) at Philadelphia - This is also off the board in a lot of places... pending Vick, I guess.  He's not gonna play, so we'll go with this.  Philly sports talk is SOOOOO good right now...

Three Team Tease - Packers +12, Houston +6, and.... tough to find a third this week.  Tampa +9.  I like New Orleans (whatever the line ends up), Seattle, and Pittsburgh as subs, in case you don't like mine.

Will try and get a bigger post up next week.  Happy Thanksgiving.  My personal fave holiday, side note... any day where you eat food, drink, and watch football, don't have to buy presents, visit a ton of places... that, my friends, is a holiday.  Hasta.

Video on the NHL Lockout and the Week 11 Picks

Baby Watch 2012 continues at LB HQ.  So allow me to be a good American and blame someone else for my problem.  In this case, I shall blame the unborn baby boy LB for keeping me from a longer post.
Of thee I sing...
However, before we go on to the picks, I did uncover this video that basically sums up the NHL labor negotiations and how the fans are getting completely screwed out of this.  Gotta watch it all to get the full impact.

Full post next week giving thanks for all to be thanks-ful for.  Random LB fact - fave holiday.  Any day where you sit around all day drinking, eating, and watching sports with no pressure of presents or going a million places in a snow storm is my idea of a holiday.  Throw in passing gas being acceptable???  Yeah, I'm in.

On to the quick picks, in case your scoring at... didn't we cover that last week?

Week 11 Picks - 6-8/2-2 locks/0-1 tease (subs would have worked!); 69-65-1/12-13/5-1 for the year

Miami (+1) at Buffalo - Didn't we cover this "weird as hell" line thing last week?  Doesn't that just seem WAY too easy?  I'm staying away this time.

Cleveland (+7.5) at Dallas - Still not sold on that Dallas team.  And I learned from my "too many favorites" theme last week.

Houston (-16) vs. Jacksonville - ZWR's wife/Texans fan is very excited about the prospect of a New Orleans trip in February.  Houston has the youngest team in the league.  Rut roh, everyone else.

St. Louis (-3) vs. NY Jets - When is Tebow gonna start?  If it weren't St. Louis, this would be a lock.

Tampa Bay (PK) at Carolina - Sucker line.  I'm taking the bait.  And making it a lock.  I so love this Tampa team.

Atlanta (-10) vs. Arizona - John Skelton is back!!!  YAY!!!  Lock #2

Green Bay (-3) at Detroit - Weird line... again.

Philadelphia (+3) at Washington - Philly is 1-8 against the spread this year.  Make it 2-8.

Kansas City (+3) vs. Cincinnatti - KC all of the sudden getting respect again.  Maybe cause they realized they have Jamaal Charles on their team.  Too bad they still have Matt Cassell.  I'll bite, though.

New Orleans (-4.5) at Oakland - They're baaaaaack!  Who dat?!

Indianapolis (+9) at New England - The Pats haven't had that "step on their throat then piss in their face" attitude this year.

Denver (-7.5) vs. San Diego - If you Eagles fans really want to see a team that's quit, watch the Chargers.  Also Andy Reid's next coaching stop.  And Lock #3.

Pittsburgh (+2.5) vs. Baltimore - There are actually a couple lines that still have Pitt -3, but it looks like Ben's not playing, so we'll go with this line.  What does all that tell you?  That Vegas thinks a rapist Big Ben is worth 5.5 points.  What?

Chicago at San Francisco - Monday night.  As of this writing, can't find a line on this game since both QBs are questionable with concussions.  My bet is neither plays, and the Niners are about a 4.5-5 point favorite.  But we won't count it this week.  I like the Niners to win it, regardless.

LB Three Team Tease - Tampa +9, Atlanta -1, Green Bay +6.  Subs include Miami +10, New Orleans +4.5, Denver +1.5.  Hell, play both of those.  Hell, let's say there's 2 LB teasers!  Play them as is up there, what the hey?

I'm beat.  Contact Logical Betting at logicalbetting@gmail.com and twitter.com/logicalbetting.  Tweets have been quiet since the Tigers went out and the baby's been near.  We'll get back at it.  Hasta.

Quick, Quick, Quick!

So I was going to get you my much anticipated Tigers moratorium this week.  Then the hurricane hit.  The wife is about thirty seconds from bursting with Baby Boy LB.  Halloween got postponed to Monday night here due to the hurricane.  I work late every Tuesday night.  And the Eagles/Saints funeral game was the Monday nighter this week.

More importantly, I realized something about our Tigers while thinking about my thinks about our season.  And, like nearly everything in life, I discovered it fit the KISS principle perfectly.  That's keep it simple, stupid, for those scoring at home.  Who scores at home?  Anyways... you want to know my thinks?  Good.  Let me explain.  No wait, there's not enough time for that.  Let me sum up...

Principles and the Week 9 Picks

Survived the Hurricane a-okay, and thanks to all who texted and emailed to check on us and the Mojos up in the NYC area.  You're all probably wondering a few other things...

Suck it, Sandy
1.  Who won last week's picks challenged with MBS and his daughter, LBS?

2.  How am I handling the Tigers loss?

Well, kids, I have very few a couple principles in life.  Allow me to share them...

Lowering the Gauntlet... Challenge, Accepted!

Now kids, I'll admit, my NFL picks this year have been a dispicable debacle a little sub par this year.  However, imagine my surprise when I received the following email from one of my most loyalest-est readers:

Ya done even pissed off Mrs. Reno!
"Please, Spare me the torture of your picks.  Just have your lovely wife pick the games and you can clean out the roof gutters on Sunday.  Rumor has it that you threw last years NFL picks up on the roof near the chimney.  While you are up there, entertain your neighbors with the Michigan fight song."

What???  Oh, you know I have something to say about that...

Is Parenting a Sport???

Looks just like his father...
Most of you know we're expecting a new member in the LB family some time in November, a boy to finally even the score in this joint.  Many other new additions in the fams of the LB crew in the last year or so, including a recent little lady to Boing (now on Twitter!), Fah's second son, and a baby boy to "who knew he read every week"... let's call him... Bob.  I think he'll know who he is with that one.  Rumor has it many other may be in the pipeline?  Homonym!  YES!!!  I'll be here all week.

Anyways, thought it was time to re-post the only post not about sports, and that was our fatherhood post from a couple years back, guest starring Fah T and Major Mojo who, quite honestly, both hit it on the head.  I have a bigger question when it comes to parenting, though...

Treating my ADHD and Week 4 Picks

Since the NFL teams all get bye weeks, I'm taking at least one, too.  That, and I'm half done with like two or three "pick intros," if thou will, and none of them are done.  Some people suffer from ADHD..... I enjoy it.

Home Remedy
But before we get to the picks, its time for our newest segment, "Proof of Mayan Doom."  In this week's installment, we discover that the Mayans are slowly breaking down our law enforcement protection.  A small New Mexico town recently had it's sheriff resign among rumors he was not allowed to carry a gun, leaving it with a police force of... a dog.  No, I'm not making this up.  Other than the baddest ass dog I heard of, Indy, (find this guy if you want to know about Indy), I'm not sure our faithful canines can stand up to laser beams fired by vengeful Mayans ripping our Earth (sans the LB bomb shelter) from it's core.

One other note about the picks... I post these based on Tuesday/Wednesday lines.  Often the general public bets them in one direction or another, so be sure to get the best line for the team you like.  This is important because 1. the general public tends to get it wrong, 2. you could get better value later in the week, 3. LB may or may not make you bet on LB locks based on the current line, and 4. I fully admit I'm part of the general public.

Week 5 Picks - 5-9-1, 1-1 on Locks (2-0 unpublished locks dammit); 25-32-1, 1-2 Locks overall

St. Louis (+1) vs. Arizona - That's a funny, funny line.  First lame Thursday nighter of the year.  Whose genius idea was that for Week 5 prime time?

NY Giants (-9) vs. Cleveland - Cleveland is 3-1 vs. the spread.  Just saying that's why this isn't a lock.

Indy (+7) vs. Green Bay - Bit of a head scratcher line.

Pittsburgh (-3) vs. Philadelphia - LOVE the Steelers here.  Off a bye, Eagles maybe the luckiest 3-1 team ever.  Philly sports talk is so funny... last week they were ready to kill someone, this week they were nicknaming their beloved defense and saying they wouldn't trade Vick for RG3.  And it's only Week 4!

Atlanta (-3) at Washington - I saw this at 2.5 somewhere, meaning that WASHINGTON would be a half point favorite on a neutral field.  WHAT???  I'm going way against the "watch the fishy line" rule, and making this a lock.

Baltimore (-5) at Kansas City - You know, I've been picking a lot of favorites, and you can pretty much see where that's getting me this year.  I've also given up on KC.  Doesn't this have 24-14 written all over it?  Why isn't this a 7 point line?

Miami (+4) at Cincinnatti - Don't ask me why, cause I honestly have no idea.

Jacksonville (+5) vs. Chicago - Potential let down game for the Bears... they win it by a field goal.

Carolina (-3) vs. Seattle - Lock #2.  Cam outscores the crap out of Seattle.

San Francisco (-10) vs. Buffalo - Lock #3.  49ers are piiiiiiissed.  Not sure why, probably that Minnesota loss.

Tennessee (+6) at Minnesota - You know, Minnesota looks legit.  Lots of big wins.  Due a let down.

Denver (+7) at New England - I'm not sold on the Pats being all the way back yet.  I watched some of that Buffalo game, and Buffalo couldn't stop Fah T from running for 100 yards.

New Orleans (-3) vs. San Diego - Okay, seriously, what the f**k line is that???  New Orleans can't play D, San Diego can score, New Orleans a pathetic 0-4... Lock #4.  Yeah, I got 4 of them!  I want .500, baby.

Houston (-7.5) at NY Jets - Te-bow! Te-bow! Te-bow!

Just felt right

Providing Incentives and the Week 4 Picks

Noble
As you may know, and if you follow the Twitters, we at Logical Betting like to post the nice things that athletes do.  You know, like not cheating on their wives and crashing their car in an Ambien filled stooper on Thanksgiving night or something that.  I seriously still can't believe that happened... ahhh, memories.

So when I saw the following story, I had a feel good moment that I just had to share with you, my loyal... here's it is:

Doing my American Duty and Week 3 Picks

Seriously, I don't know where to begin.  The LB locks, my stone cold, 80%+ victory guideline, has gone ice cold.  Starting with last year's playoffs and into the first two weeks this year, the locks are something like 1-5 the last 6.  What the hell?  Cards go into New England and win outright???

Doing my duty
Being a good American citizen, I know there's only one thing to do... completely deny any responsbility and find someone or something to blame this atrocity on.  So after spending countless days hours minutes searching for answers, and after deciding not to use this space to try and figure out who to blame for the Tigers mess (Mother... F***er...), I finally figured out why the LB locks have been so... wrong.

And really, who else could we blame?

NHL Lockout Looms and Week 2 Picks

The NHL is about to gamble on the loyalty of its fan base one more time.   Yep, Gary Bettman, in his infinite wisom, is doing his best to fuck over the sport get another cash grab for the NHL owners.  Note - this would be his third lockout since he became commissioner.  Niiiiiice...
Seriously, it's this crazy

Now, I'll be the first to admit, and have written many times, that the NHL needed to do something drastic during the last labor strike.  And it worked.  But what gets me most, and seems to be recurring theme of late, is one of the sticking points the owners want that makes absolutely zero sense...

New Logical Betting Rule and Week 1 Picks

Well, almost anyone can win...
One of the coolest things about the NFL is that anybody can win pretty much every year.  Always a sneaky team, even if they are 7-9 making the playoffs, then winning as a two touchdown dawg (I'm not linking this, you should know about Seattle doing that... oops).

Anyways, the Rules of Logical Betting have long been discussed and have long been successful.  But let's face it, change is good.  Gotta adapt to the times, ya know?  So with that, we unveil an addendum to Rule #2...

No Excuses - NFL Playoff Locks, Week 2

Stay classy, my friends.

If you follow my Twitter, then you definitely heard the story about three Flyers fans beating a Rangers fan unconscious after the Winter Classic last week.  Oh, and did I mention that he was an Iraq war vet who, video shows, held his hands up in an attempt to avoid the fight?
I only mention this story again to piss off Philly sports fans because it's a perfect example and segway for me to make excuses why I (only) went 3-1 last week, and 2-1 on my locks.

Conference Championship Picks

Longer post is forthcoming, but an unsponsored quick pick/breakdown for your not-gambling pleasure, following rules of Logical Betting...

Steelers (-3.5) vs. Jets - Out of principle, I don't do playoff locks. But if I were going to... you mean I only have to lay 3.5 against the most overrated QB in NFL history (Sanchez) with the home team on my side, with the best defense in the NFL? Hmmmm, okay. I think everyone is taking that Jets win a little too seriously. In retrospect, the Pats had some serious flaws. Take the Stilers, those in Vegas. Though I really want the Jets to win, cause I don't think my Bears can beat Pittsburgh. Steelers 24, Jets 13.

Bears (+3.5) vs. Packers - In reality, I don't have high hopes for the Bears. But when the whole world is riding Green Bay, and very few think that the Bears are going to win this game, that's when I take the home dog. Besides, if me and ARG wearing the exact same things as last week is any indication, we're guaranteed a trip back to the Super Bowl. This won't be pretty, kids, but it will be for me. Bears D bends, and bends often, but shall not break. I love sports cliches. Bears 20, Packers 19.

Hasta.

Sports New Years Resolutions 2011

Quick hit NFL picks for the week before getting to brass tacks and whatever…

Ravens +3.5 at Pittsburgh – Because these games are always close and the Ravens are the 2nd best team left.

Pats -8.5 vs. Jets – Because Mark Sanchez sucks even when he’s not injured (and he’s probably injured) and Belichick is going to run this up if he gets a chance.

Bears -10 vs. Seattle – Because the Bears are finally running the ball and not leaving Cutler back there to get crushed every play.

Falcons -2.5 vs. Green Bay – Because I hope it goes the other way (reverse jinx), Green Bay is overvalued, and Atlanta is tough at home. Moving on…

Welcome, welcome to the 2nd 2nd Annual Post here at Logical Betting, Sports New Year’s Resolutions! Believe it or not, I have an opinion on things that need to change in our beloved sports world, and because I know you’re dying to hear them, we bring them to you LIVE today. So take notes and email, call, and fax your Congresspeople and tell them to demand the following changes immediately. Think they’re too busy? Have you not been paying attention the last 10 years? Brought to you unofficially today by Detroit 1-8-7, a kick ass show I am catching up on DVR as we speak, so to speak.

1. Major League Baseball – Starting with an easy and obvious. Baseball is doing quite well for itself, actually, thanks in part to the NHL being non-existent (sigh…), the NBA being diluted, and NASCAR popularity diving fast. But it’s mostly in part to good athletes and (generally) good baseball. We addressed the slowness factor last year, but let’s go with the clichéd request this year: institute more replay. Here is the LB suggestion:

- Keep review of homeruns. Add review of fair/foul calls in the same way homeruns are done and/or have a booth in MLB headquarters (ala the NHL) and have them buzz down when they want to review the call. No challenges by managers or anything. All reviews done at MLB HQ. I would not review safe/out calls, much to mine and Armando Gallaraga’s dismay, only because I think we’d be there all day and I think we should preserve some human element to the game, for tradition’s sake.

See how simple? Your welcome. Good work overall, MLB, you guys are looking strong. Onward.

2. NFL – Another league raking in cash and popularity. Not much to change here, really. They should resolve not to lock out, and I think that’s a given, so I have another plea: Don’t expand to 18 games. Not for the competitive piece, mind you, and not for player safety. One reason: Fantasy Football! C’mon, you’re going to torture us for two more weeks??? It’s hard enough watching games and trying not to root for players or outcomes for like 14-16 weeks, but two more??? Ugh. We’d have to move up our drafts, start researching in July… Chances are we’re going to 18, but just getting that out there. This will definitely not stop me from playing fantasy, for the record, which is a relief to my buddies who get me every year, even though My Hero and I were 2 and 3 in points this year, and missed the playoffs in a 10 team league. That was for you, ZWR, if you’re reading.

3. NBA – Going a little unconventional here, but this is my simple advice: Lock out. The system is broken, fix it. It’s not good when you’re basically punished for remaining competitive enough to make the playoffs. You have to completely tank it and/or take on huge contracts for bad players to start to rebuild at all. A few suggestions, some of which are being kicked around in bargaining… which is why they’ll probably lock out.

- Shorten length of contracts, no more than 4 years with a 5th year option.

- No more than 2 year guaranteed on any contract.

- Implement NFL age limit rules – minimum three years college before entering NBA. Reduces risk of bad draft picks by bad teams, thus giving them the chance to get competitive again.

- Increase the percentage difference in contracts for trades. Right now, it’s in the 10-15% range, if you increase it, you can increase trades and give teams a chance to rebuild.

- Create a hard salary cap, but decrease the amount teams must spend in order to accommodate the above increase in trades and ability to sign multiple free agents. Increase total cap to allow for increased spending.

Not a lot of people follow the NBA anymore, and I think they should look at contraction, too. I don’t think it’s gonna happen, but just throwing it out there. Okay, since most of you aren’t big NBA folk, other than the Pistons and Sixers, who both stink, so we’ll move on.

4. NHL – We’re going to go into more depth with the NHL again, like we did last year, but here’s a quick to do list for them until then.

- Fire Gary Bettman. Duh.

- Contract 2 teams. Now. Midseason. Who cares? Refund tickets. Whatever it takes. Grab headlines. Do it the week after the Super Bowl.

- Take out a map of North America. Starting at San Jose, take a black sharpie draw a line down around Denver, then down around St. Louis, go straight back up to Chicago, cross Northern Ohio, dip down just west of Pittsburgh, loop under Washington, DC, go east until you hit the Atlantic Ocean, then go straight up the East Coast until you hit the northern border of Canada.

- After the season, contract and/or relocate any team located below that line. List of acceptable relocations: Hamilton, Ontario; Toronto (2nd team); Winnipeg; Hartford; Minneapolis (2nd team, only if it’s the Stars).

Once that’s done, come back to Logical Betting, read last year’s NHL posts, then read this year’s NHL post. Hire JB as commissioner, and ZWR as 2nd in command in charge of marketing. Sit back, enjoy.

5. NCAA Football/Basketball – I think we all know how I feel about the BCS by now, and I’m 100% against expanding the NCAA tourney as well, and I won’t get into detail beyond the fact we don’t need another round of games to find out why those 32 teams shouldn’t have made the field. Instead, I’m asking the NCAA to call a press conference and read the following letter. Go ahead and copy/paste it, I’m not suing.

“Thank you all for coming. We hope you enjoyed the bowl season and the traditions of legendary games like the Beef O’Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl. We’re looking forward to an expanded NCAA tournament, adding 32 deserving teams to the most dramatic three weeks in sports, where we crown a true national champion.

We’re here to offer our apologies for believing that you, the sports fan, is dumb enough to fall for our tricks. We’re not stupid, we know these two systems contradict each other. We know claiming academic integrity and tradition in football makes no sense in light of expanding the NCAA tournament. We know that having tournaments for Division 2 and Division 3 football makes it look like we care about those kids' educations less. It’s tough coming up with excuses for what we do. Trust me, we pay a lot of smart people to come up with this stuff, and it’s the best we have. To be honest, this is about making money. Really, it is. But we have good reasons: we can deficit fund sports and scholarships for thousands of athletes, upgrade facilities all over campus, and provide a strong, genuine sense of community and pride in schools that leads to further giving from alumni, which leads to better universities.

But you gotta realize, people don’t buy that touchy feely truth. We gotta come up with a different “truth,” the one we try and push on you every time we make a money-grabbing decision. Today, we announce that the lies stop. We will be honest about all our decisions from here in, even when it involves just trying to make more cash. Starting today, if we’re just going for more cash, ala the expanded NCAA tournament and pushing for 40 bowl games, we’ll be up front about it. Thank you for bearing with us for so long. We look forward to a continued strong relationship with our fans and the great universities of the United States.

In that vein, we would like to announce that, inspired by the Bears/Vikings Monday night game a few weeks ago, we will be playing the Bass Pro Shops Minnesota Bowl, held in TCF Bank Stadium on January 9th at noon. It will feature the 4th place team from the Sun Belt taking on the 9th place team from the Big Ten. Congratulations to both conferences and the citizens of Minneapolis. This will truly add to the competitive traditions of the bowl season.”

There you have it. Other than the NHL, completely doable. That trainwreck… well, we’ll get there, possibly with accompanying podcasts from JB (if he can keep it clean… not likely, but we’ll try) and my cousin, who is requesting air time. Risky business. Alright, everyone, comments and suggestions on the blog or email to me. Thanks for reading. Hasta.

NFL Playoff Picks

It’s NFL playoff time, which is good times, but also when everyone busts out their “prognostication/Swami/crystal ball” whatever. I’m not down with that cliché, only every other one, so I’m going to do like always and just tell you like it is… this is my “what I think will happen in the playoffs” post. Catchy, right? I’m copyrighting that one. Unofficially brought to you today by Tostitos Hint of Lime chips. Yumms.

As you may (not) recall, I had the Saints to beat the Pack, the Ravens over Indy, and the Saints to repeat over the Ravens in the Super Bowl at the beginning of the year. Good for me cause they’re both in the playoffs, bad for me cause one of them doesn’t have a great shot at it. But, being as generous as I am, I will give you picks, picks vs. spread (Round 1), and what I need for LB to have ESP. Oh, you, chitty chitty bang bang, we love you.

Wild Card Round

New Orleans (-10.5) at Seattle – 7-9, eh? I’m not for re-seeding or eliminating the division winner playoff things. We hit a statistical outlier. Big deal. Oh wait, Brett Favre isn’t around to suck up 20 minutes of Sportscenter, better find something else to make look interesting that isn’t. By the way, you know even ESPN is sick of Favre when he gets sued by two more Jets masseuses for (allegedly) sending lewd texts. Brett, you are thankfully and finally out of our lives. For now. Anyways, don’t discount Seattle’s home field here, they actually are legitimately better at home, and have some talent on that team. However, do discount them having any chance to win this game. I’ll lay the points, but I could see a back door cover here. Which would be a dream scenario for Vegas, cause I don’t think the Seahawks would bet on themselves. It is nice that Pete Carroll can pay his players legally now, though, right? Pick – New Orleans across the board.

Jets (+3) at Indy – Not sure why this got the Saturday night slot, NBC got to pick it, I believe. How did they turn down Green Bay/Philly? Something strange brewing in the commish’s office, maybe? Regardslesses, this is the prime chance for the world to see what LB has known for awhile… Mark Sanchez blows. If he can’t throw on the Colts, he can’t throw on… the Colts. Seriously, if Sanchez played anywhere else, no one would even talk about this dude. Over-freaking-rated. I don’t feel like ranting today, so time to stop before I get angry. It’s a new year, right? In any case, despite Indy being 1-5 in the Wild Card Round under Manning, are you about to take Sanchez over him at home? Yeah, me neither. See, Logical Betting? Write that down, kids. Pick – Colts across the board.

Ravens (-2.5) at Chiefs – I thought the Chiefs were feisty at home, then they no showed a game against a division rival with a chance to lock up the 3 seed and avoid the Pats in the 2nd round. Oops. How about that .500 record from Oakland, by the way? What if they had a quarterback? What’s that? Oh, they’re not playing in this game. Got it. If the Ravens ran the ball more than Andy Reid, they would have been 13-3. They should be, for God’s sake. The Chiefs are an enigma, meaning don’t bet this game, but if you must, bet against them (bad good team). The Ravens are good against the run, will shut down Bowe, and this should be simple for them. However, they have been anything but simple all year. Wouldn’t be shocked to see KC win this 19-17 or something like that. The public bet this line down a half point to start, and I’m guessing it gets bet back up. Logical Betting, kids, the Ravens are just plain better, and that tends to win out, especially when the better team also happens to be rocking much better playoff experiences. Pick – Ravens across the board.

Packers (+2.5) at Eagles – Sports talk around here is starting to reveal what some have known for a while now… the Eagles have not looked good since about Week 10, and this is a bad matchup for them. The Packers defense is physical, the corners can tackle, and the linebackers are quick, which is the recipe for slowing down the big plays. The Birds need to take shots over the top early and often (which they have done this year) and try and attack the Packers safeties. That, and they need to either run the ball, and/or use McCoy a lot in the screen/check down game, like they should have been doing against Chicago. Green Bay is going to score, the question is whether the Eagles will get enough big plays to win. This is not a 10 play/80 yard Eagles team. And that will be their downfall in a year that was both entertaining, beat expectations, and will somehow probably seem a little disappointing to Eagles fans. The mood around here seems to be setting up for disappointment. I actually liked the Birds to win this for awhile, then I heard the following stat: 76%. As in, the percentage of touchdowns opponents score in the red zone against the Eagles. Yikes. Pick – Green Bay across the board.

Divisional Round

New Orleans at Chicago – As a Bears fan, I am praying the Eagles win that game and I avoid this matchup. As it were, this is a disaster for us Bears fans. New Orleans has a great pass defense and is a turnover machine. Jay Cutler, too, is a turnover machine. Also, for us Bears fans, a nausea-inducing machine. Seriously, I get completely pumped up and freaked out every time he’s not handing the ball off. God, it’s going to be a long few years. At least we have a legit QB again, though. Anywho, I know none of you care about that, so… Forte needs 25 carries in this game for the Bears to have a shot. Otherwise, we’re one and done. Good year for us, though, watch them draft O-Line, WR, and D-line next year. Pick – New Orleans, in reality and LBESP world.

Green Bay at Atlanta – Matt Ryan is 18-2 at home. Word. Atlanta’s defense is underappreciated, and I think they can run on Green Bay. If this game is played anywhere else on the planet, it’s Green Bay all night long. By the way, current Super Bowl odds on Bodog have the Saints at 10-1, Eagles at 11-1, and Packers at 12-1. Don’t those sound look good value bets? Anyways… Pick – Atlanta. LBESP – Green Bay.

Ravens at Pittsburgh – I think Baltimore would have a better shot at the Pats. They won in Foxborough last year, and could easily do it again. The Stilers own them. If I were the Ravens, I would make my cheerleaders do a Victoria’s Secret runway show in Big Ben’s hotel hallway all night. Steelers win an ugly one. Is there any other thing in Pittsburgh in January? Not if you’re Big Ben, HAHAHAHA. Sorry, can’t help myself. How is this dude not under arrest again? Pick – Pittsburgh. LBESP – Ravens.

Colts at Pats – This rivalry is getting old. I also think I’m one of the few people who doesn’t see the Pats winning the Super Bowl. Gut feeling, I guess. This year, Tom Brady put up only the second season where a QB had a 6 to 1 or better TD/INT ration, going a freaking psycho 36 TD to 4 INT, one of which was on a Hail Mary. The other season? Tom Brady a few years ago. Scary. If they win the Super Bowl, he’s why. See, Mojo, QBs CAN win games, even championships. Name two other offensive players on New England. Exactly. And if you got Green-Ellis, it’s cause he was good in fantasy, not because you had heard of him before. Pick – New England. LBESP – Colts (if that happens, I really may have ESP).

Conference Championships

Saints at Falcons – Part 3 in our exciting triology! Actually, this would not be that exciting for most people, though watching that Monday nighter the other week (with my dad to watch the official clinch of our fantasy league title… ah, thank you!), this will be good football. Experience vs. one rocking home field advantage and a team loaded with talent. Who dat? Pick – Saints. LBESP – Saints over Packers in New Orleans, in a shoot out.

Steelers at Pats – This would be really simple… if the game is played 24 points/team or less, the Steelers pull the upset. If the Pats get to 24, then the Steelers be screwed. They would have to win the field position battle all day, and I mean that literally, all four quarters, and make Brady dink and dunk for 80 yards at a time. Mendenhall better eat his Wheaties. And his Cortisone-shoties. Pick – Patriots. LBESP – Ravens over Indy at home, ugly, something like 22-20.

Super Bowl

Saints vs. Pats – I actually do like the Saints to get here, and I just don’t see anyone not named Baltimore beating the Pats in the AFC. I’ll forgo the long breakdown for a later post, but for the fun of it… Saints 34, Patriots 31. LBESP – Saints over Ravens.

New Year’s Resolutions are ready and will be posted soon. Comments/suggestions on the old blog or to my email. Hasta, and thanks for reading.

NFL Picks and a new LB character

Coming...to...you...LIVE from South Jersey (boring) with Major Mojo and his fam on hand for Army/Navy weekend, his pop here repping the D, and our newest member of the Logical Betting Cast of Characters, (sorry, side note... Mojo just took my beer. What the f**k?)... anyways, our newest member of the Logical Betting Cast of Characters, Elf. Mojo just came up with that, good for him. On to Elf's bio:

Elf is the proud father of two of the finest young gentleman in South Jersey. He, along with yours truly, is the co-founder of the awesomest boys' night ever created. His wife declares him the greatest husband ever, and I concur. He really is. Don't let your wife near him, or you're f***ed. Just saying. He's a damn solid Philly sports fan, and one who actually admits the Eagles deserve to lose games sometimes. Yes, folks, they exist.

Onto the picks. We're unofficially sponsored by my beer fridge, which is supplying the guts for this week's lines. The locks are 11-1, with my Bears just missing last week and failing to cover the 5. Otherwise, bet my locks if you dare. Mojo and Elf guest spot this week, and away we go.

Green Bay (-7) at Detroit - A lot of people like the Lions in this, for some reason. I'm taking the Pack. Elf - "I still feel like Green Bay isn't that good. I got Detroit." Mojo - "Detroit wins by 4." It should be noted that Mojo has never picked against the Lions in his life. It should also be noted that if the Lions fail to win another game this year, they will have won a total of 44 the entire decade. Stop ripping my Bears off the blog, Mojo.

Jags (-4) vs. Oakland - Line is short, but I'm riding the Jags. Elf - "What time's the game? (One, dude). Definitely Jags. West Coast coming East for a 1 o'clock." Mojo - "I will go with Oakland. (Why?) I just don't think Jax is going to take control of that game." Right.

I just suggested that we get Mojo's dad to follow my blog. Mojo, "That might be tough, considering we just explained what blogging was 30 minutes ago." Good point. Also, we decided to watch the Heat/Warriors game over Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, "because hopefully LeBron will die." That was my and Mojo's take. Literally. Back to picks. After another beer.

Steelers (-8.5) vs. Cincy - Call this LB Lock #1. Elf - "Steelers. I feel like they haven't played a blowout game in awhile, though. The Bengals are just that bad." Mojo - "Steelers." This is a Lock, kids, chalk it up.

Carolina (+7.5) vs. Atlanta - Line seems short. No way I would bet this game. Elf - "Atlanta, still need home field throughout, and they're way better at home." Gulp. Mojo - "Is there something I should know about this game? (No.) Atlanta. (All you have to say?) Yep. Atlanta." Quiet tonight. He needs Tecmo Bowl to talk more.

Browns (+1) at Buffalo - Browns are good. They win by 10. No, I'm not locking that. Elf - "(not paying attention). Who? Buffalo or in Toronto? Cleveland." Mojo - "Cleveland. Anyone else in Buffalo this week, then Buffalo. Hold on, Delhomme is starting? I'll take Buffalo. Snowing, right?" He's really all about the snow on this... he's still talking about it... and how he used to live in Carolina and hates snow... ut, Wade went down, he's distracted now, we can move on.

Tampa Bay (-2) at Washington - Lock #2. Love, love, love the Bucs. Elf - "(not paying attention...skipping him)." Mojo - "Tampa. Washington stinks." Bet this, kids, ride the Bucs.

Giants (-3) at Minnesota - It doesn't matter, Minnesota can't stop that pass rush. Elf - "Giants. Favre starts, then leaves." Mojo - "Vikings if Favre starts." Mojo, you know it's not 1998, right? "Don't care." Elf just said he wants the Giants to lose, so he knows they'll win. Hmmmm... that was pushing lock material, but we'll leave this be.

Saints (-9) vs. Rams - I don't pick against the Saints at home. Elf - "I don't know...I'll give the 9, give me the Saints. They'll win, I don't know about the 9, though." Mojo - "I don't care who they're playing, I got the Saints. (told it was the Rams) Good." Elf just pointed out that we know none of the Golden State starters, especially with Steph Curry out of this game. Chris Mullin just got a shout out. I love doing these picks live and buzzed, it's so much more fun.

49ers (-5.5) vs. Seattle - Line seems high, give the points, LB readers. Elf - "I know absolutely nothing about Seattle. Elf - "I'll take the Niners, only because who knows how bad Seattle really is." Mojo - "In the spirit of cheering for Golden State, I'll take the Niners."

Chargers (-7) vs. KC - Line seems high, give the points, LB readers. No, I did not copy/paste that. Mojo (gets to go first this time cause Elf is checking on his gentlemen sleeping under the Christmas tree in the other room) - "Love the Chargers, they'll bounce back." Elf - "Chargers, Cassel's probably not playing." Good point. That's a near lock, too... hmmm... nahhh. Can't bet Chargers games, too big an enigma.

We just cheered a Warriors dunk, "good job, guy whose name we don't know!" I love the NBA. I'm (probably not) going to miss it next year when they lock out. By the way, Elf makes an awesome Buffalo Chicken dip. Just throwing that out there.

Dolphins (+5) vs. Jets - The Jets are a fraud. I think they win, but don't cover. Elf - "Jets. (that was confident, anything more?) I think they're pissed off that a** beating on Monday night. And they're at home." Mojo - "Jets, they bounce back."

Broncos (-4) at Arizona - Arizona is starting a QB I have never heard of, and I couldn't remember his name when Mojo asked. I saw it on the bottom line, that's all I got. Elf - "Denver is giving points? Wow. I'll take them. That's disgusting state of affair when they are giving points." Mojo - "Denver, new coach is gonna be beginners luck."

Somehow, we just got on a debate that 1. Anfernee Hardaway's mom named him "Anfernee" because she couldn't spell "Anthony." Elf is currently Googling. 2. Jason Garrett was throwing games to get the Cowboys gig. No way, Elf. He's already earning his spot on the Cast. Good work.

Bears (+3) vs. Pats - Bears outright. This is a huge Bears line. This line should be 7. Mojo - "Pats all the way." He's taking the bet. Elf - "Bears. Unfortunately, I think they're gonna win." Mojo is still talking Pats s**t.

Elf just found out that Penny Hardaway got his nickname from his grandmother calling him "pretty" with a Southern drawl, thus sounding like, "Penny." He is firm in his "Anfernee/Anthony" belief now. Gotta admit, that's tough to argue.

Eagles (-3.5) at Dallas - Dallas defense stinks, Vick is gonna be huge this week. Elf - "Birds. Need to win it, and they will." Mojo - "Eagles. I need Vick to keep winning my fantasy games." He doesn't care that my team was better on points and missed the playoffs, for the record.

Texans (+3) vs. Ravens - Short line, no other explanations. The boys both agree on that, we all think the line should be 6 and the Ravens haven't blown anyone out.

Alright, so locks this week are Steelers -8.5 vs. Cincy and Tampa -2 at Washington. The boys, beer-infused, agree. Mojo says he would call the Eagles a lock, Elf disagrees, and so do I. If you want to bet the Cowboys against Mojo, email me and I'll arrange it for you. Until then... HASTA.
